The Last Guests

Author(s): J P Pomare

Thriller

In this thrilling new novel a wife finds herself racing for answers when the decision to rent out her family vacation home takes a deadly turn.
Newlyweds Lina and Cain don't make it out to their vacation home on gorgeous Lake Tarawera as often as they'd like, so when Cain suggests they rent the property out on weekends, Lina reluctantly agrees. While the home has been special to her family for generations, their neighbors are all signing up to host renters, and frankly, she and Cain could use the extra money. What could go wrong?
And at first, Lina is amazed at how quickly guests line up to spend a weekend- and at how much they're willing to pay.  But both Lina and Cain have been keeping secrets, secrets that won't be kept out by a new alarm system or a locked cupboard.
When strange things begin happening on their property, and a visit takes a deadly turn, Lina becomes convinced that someone out there knows something they shouldn't - and that when they come for her, there will be nowhere left to hide.

The story of a young Auckland couple – Lisa a paramedic and her husband Carl, an ex-soldier.  Both have secrets from each other that are cleverly woven into the bigger story of the couple renting out Lisa’s inherited property at Lake Tarawera.  Lisa is reluctant to have strangers in this house, as she has some very happy memories of being raised by her maternal grandparents at the lake but financial worries (Carl is a gambler) force her hand.  Not much more can be said about the progression of this story as it would 'give the game away'.

What a fabulous setting Josh has chosen for this very believable premise for a story (unfortunately that makes it even scarier)!  The very landscape at Tarawera, although beautiful, I have always found quite intimidating – a brooding mountain looking down over a large body of water.  I don’t think I will ever be able to visit this area again without thinking about this story and at the same time swearing to never book a B&B again! Thrillers are not my usual genre, but I may have been converted – I couldn’t put this book down! Prue
