Kevin Ireland is one of New Zealand's best-known writers. In 1990 he received an OBE for services to literature and he was winner of the 1977 New Zealand Book Award for Poetry. He has also received a National Book Award for Poetry, a Montana Prize for History and Biography, and in 2000 he was made an Honorary Doctor of Literature by Massey University.
