Since the Second World War and until recent times, American cars have been luxury items. Import controls and the US dollar put them beyond the reach of most Kiwis. But in the last twenty years a large number of 1950s and 60s US cars have arrived. Sleek and chrome be-decked, American cars are the cars of fantasy and cult. They are the cars featured in film, music and literature and the throb of the V8 engine can still make heads turn.
