The three sequences of 'Love Poems', 'Charms' and 'Curses' are an arrestingly original mix of observation, performance and jokes. A section of lyric poems slows the pace, and then four powerful long poems take the reader travelling, through memory and into the present, through the Wanganui backblocks, rural Germany and other places.

Airini Beautrais completed a Master of Arts in Creative Writing at Victoria University in 2005. She has a background in ecological science. She is also a musician and has played in a folk/rock band called The Raskolnikovs for the last three years. She works as a secondary teacher.
Her first book is called Secret Heart and was published by VUP in 2006. It was named as the Best First Book of Poetry in the Montana New Zealand Book Awards 2007.
