Drawing extensively upon original sources, this book examines the reasons for British intervention in New Zealand, the process of acquiring sovereignty from Maori, and the original meaning of the Treaty. It also explores the ramifications of the Treaty for our own day and age in the present grievance-based political climate. In the process of assessment, principal revisionist myths are discounted, reactionist claims are addressed, and modern politically correct concepts of partnership are seriously questioned. The Treaty is shown to be a guarantee of equality in citizenship under Crown supremacy, extending to Maori those fundamental civil rights inherent to all British citizens, and confirming that same equality to all New Zealanders today.
