This paper examines the experiences of a Maori incorporation, Wakatu Incorporation of Nelson, as it struggles to reclaim rangatiratanga over its lands since its establishment in 1977. It demonstrates that reclaiming rangatiratanga in the forms of autonomy and self-determination was not and is not an easy process, and that the Crown can be both an active and a passive stumbling block to the achievement of such aspirations.
