The Summer of the Dolphin

Author(s): Walker, Jacqueline, Hokianga Historical Society

Rotorua Books

The year 2006 is a special anniversary in the Hokianga. It was 50 years ago in the summer of 1955-56 that a lone dolphin came to live in the harbour. Much celebrated for its playful sociability among swimmers, particularly children, the dolphin brought the region an unprecedented burst of publicity. It was the Hokianga's first, and for a long time only, tourist season. This booklet is a collection of photographs and text from both published and unpublished sources, and oral contributions from eye-witnesses. They have been gathered together here as a way of celebrating that memorable summer in Hokianga 50 years ago.
