Lockwood: From Innovation to Icon in 50 Years

Author(s): Gainsford, Jennie

Rotorua Books

This publication celebrates the success of the ventures we know today as the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and Lockwood Homes. The National Historic Places Trust came into existence 50 years ago. At much the same time a new and innovative building technique was being developed by two new immigrants to the country, Johannes La Grouw and Johannes van Loghem. As the New Zealand Historic Places Trust is dedicated to the promotion and protection of the built heritage in this country, the Bay of Plenty Branch committee decided to approach the Rotorua Museum of Art and History with the idea of mounting an exhibition to celebrate 50 years of the Trust and 50 years of Lockwood Homes, which have now achieved icoic status. Say 'Lockwood' and every Kiwi can immediately visualise the type of building that is meant, with its natural wood interiors and interlocking corners. This publication is the result of a research project undertaken on behalf of the Bay of Plenty committee by Jennie Gainsford for the exhibition.
