Lydall Hancock attended Otago University and taught in New Zealand and Scotland before returning to Dunedin and becoming a teaxtbook seller, a cataloguer at the University Library, and a church archivist. She first visited Quaratine Island in 1961 which sparked an interest in its history and story which she began researching.
