Best's notes on war customs, practices and ceremonies of the Maori were published as nine articles and supplementary notes in the Journal of the Polynesian Society between 1902 and 1906. Based on his research among the Tuhoe people, these notes on war as conducted by the Maori of New Zealand, with accounts of various customs, rites, superstitions, etc. represent one of the most detailed studies of warfare as practised by Maori society.
