A Hunting Life

Author(s): Tony Orman

Hunting

All hunters, both young and old, will find this book a fascinating read!

Tony Orman is well respected in NZ hunting circles. Now in his seventies, he still relishes any opportunity to escape everyday routine, to throw his gear into a pack, pick up his rifle and head off into the mountains. He is a passionate advocate for hunting and the great outdoors. With A Hunting Life, his 23rd book, he begins with the all-important first deer; he records conversations with old-timers who farmed and hunted in New Zealand through the 1930s; he considers deer numbers and talks about conservation, and he recalls great trips with former hunting names such as Philip Holden.

Ducking and diving between subjects, he notes the changes in hunting gear and attitudes over the years, and philosophises about the greater meaning of going hunting. Tony also asks some of the challenging questions concerning the access debate, 1080 poisoning, the environment and other matters.

Product Information

Tony Orman is well known in outdoor circles not only for a string of fishing and deerstalking books but also as an advocate for the public's hunting and fishing resources. He began deerstalking in the late 1950s, and has so far had over 50 years of active hunting. He is still going strong - if slightly slower - with his 74th birthday just around the corner. A former land surveyor, town planner and school teacher, he has since been in journalism as editor of a national farming paper Straight furrow, of national outdoor magazines Alive and NZ Hunting and Wildlife, and has written articles for hunting and fishing magazines both in New Zealand and overseas
