This map illustrates the geology of the Waikato area, extending from Huntly south across the Waikato to the King Country and north Taranaki, and east to the edge of the central North Island volcanic plateau. Geological information has been obtained from published and unpublished mapping by GNS geologists, from work by staff and students of the University of Auckland and the University of Waikato, from coal and petroleum exploration, and from digital databases held by GNS and NIWA. The accompanying text summarises the geology and tectonic development of the Waikato area, as well as its economic and engineering geology and potential geological hazards.
