As young immigrants new to New Zealand, Bart and Huberta Hellendoorn long for the children who will make them into a family. Although their joy at the birth of their first child Miriam is initially tested when they learn she has Down Syndrome, her parents welcome her with love and optimism. The Madonna in the Suitcase depicts the hardships inherent in raising a child with special needs, but also celebrates the joys and the triumphs as Miriam develops into a young woman of courage, determination and with a unique talent.

Product Information

Huberta Hellendoom was born in The Netherlands (1937), has lived in Dunedin since 1960, and is married with three children. She has BA in Classical Studies and has worked in administrative positions at the University of Otago. Her published writing includes: short stories in Sport and Takahe; magazines articles; short story in 'Another 30 New Zealand Stories'; short stories on Radio New Zealand National. There is a five-episode adaptation of 'The Madonna in the Suitcase' forthcoming.
