Edward Eyre was a mid-nineteenth century explorer, colonial administrator, and later colonial governor. He is remembered as the enlightened defender of Aboriginal rights in Australia, and in England and the Caribbean as the reviled 'butcher of Jamaica'. In the years between he was Lieutenant-Governor in New Zealand. Julie Evans is based in Melbourne. First published September 2005.
