Featured Book Review: The Dovekeepers, by Alice Hoffman

This book is a rich, lyrical text that weaves together the stories of four women; all from different backgrounds; all finding themselves caught up intimately in the lives of one another in the dove
cotes of Herod's fortress in Masada, where 900 Jews have fled to escape the fast-spreading genocide at the hands of the Roman Empire.
Hoffman spent years researching this period of history and culture and the tragic historical event where, out of the 900 Jews on the mountain, only two women and five children survived. The book is divided into four main parts, each told from the perspective of the four women: Yael is the woman with hair the colour of blood, who has a sad past of abandonment and who found love in the desert with another woman's husband. She meets the other three women at her assigned job in the dovecotes; Revka is a bitter woman with two mute grandsons after witnessing the brutal murder of her daughter. Shirah is referred to as 'the witch of Moab', a beauty who practices magic and herblore, and who has many secrets of her own. The last woman is Aziza, her daughter, who was brought up as a warrior and a boy, and who secretly longs to join the men on the battlefield rather than do the women's work now assigned to her.
This book tells the stories of their past and present, which lead on from eachother until the chilling climax of the novel, the massacre on the mountain. The language is beautifully descriptive and I just relished it, along with the fleshed out characters and marvellously constructed story. An experience not to be missed! - Jemma
