From bestselling historian Adrian Goldsworthy, a profoundly authentic, action-packed adventure set in Roman Britain.

AD 100: BRITANNIA.
THE EDGE OF THE ROMAN WORLD.

Flavius Ferox is the hardbitten centurion charged with keeping the peace on Britannia's frontier with the barbarian tribes of the north. Now he's been summoned to Londinium by the governor, but before he sets out an imperial freedman is found brutally murdered in a latrine at Vindolanda fort - and Ferox must find the killer.

As he follows the trail, the murder leads him to plots against the empire and Rome itself, and an old foe gathering mysterious artefacts in the hope of working a great magic. Bandits, soldiers, and gladiators alike are trying to kill him, old friends turn traitor, and Ferox is lured reluctantly to the sinister haunts of the old druids on the isle of Mona, and the bitter power struggle among the Brigantes, the great tribe of the north...

'An instant classic of the genre' HARRY SIDEBOTTOM.

'An authentic, enjoyable read' THE TIMES.

~ Brigantia was a mythical Goddess who was worshipped by Britons in northern England. She inspired Boudicia and, 50 years later, was again invoked by a Druid priest to unite the many tribes of Britannia and rise up against Roman rule.
Set around A D 100, the incumbent Roman emperor,Trajan, was nobody’s fool. Voted by the Senate “optimas princeps” (best ruler), he was himself a soldier and presided over the maximum territorial reach that the empire ever achieved. That’s part of the problem here; when a centurion requests reinforcements from Rome, he is advised that there are none; Rome is stretched, and when the centurion tries to find the Druid priest, he instead discovers a plot within. There are high ranking Roman officers preparing to move against the emperor. The centurion is lead to the island of Mona (Anglesey), to confront the Druid, only to find that a trap has been laid. This is fiction that will make your hair stand on end. I went to sleep with my eyes open! Highly recommended. Mike
