American photographer Steve McCurry (b.1950) is universally recognized as one of today's finest image-makers. This monograph reviews the complete spectrum of his work from documentary photographs of conflict in Afghanistan to memorable images of Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia, in which he captures the essence of human experience.

Anthony Bannon Director of George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, N.Y., Dr Anthony Bannon serves on boards for the New York State Council for the Humanities, Smithsonian Council and the Santa Fe Center for Photography. He has curated a show on McCurry's Tibetan works and his publications include Photo Pictorialists of Buffalo, winner of the American Photographic Historical Society's merit award, and the essay 'On Interpretation' (Image, vol. 39, no.3-4).
