Author description

Colin Monteath is one of New Zealand's best-known and widely published writers and photographers specialising in imagery of New Zealand's landscape, wildlife and mountain adventures. Colin has travelled and worked extensively in mountain regions outside New Zealand such as Antarctica and the Himalaya however he considers New Zealand's mountain, bush and coastal environments to be the finest of all. His work was recently recognised by National Geographic Books for a year-long assignment around New Zealand. Colin was the principal photographer for the highly acclaimed book Antarctica - Great Stories from the Frozen Continent (Reader's Digest 1985) and co-author of Wild Ice - Antarctic Journeys (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1990). His other books include New Zealand - Land at the End of the Earth (White Star 1995), Antarctica - Beyond the Southern Ocean (David Bateman 1996), Hall and Ball - Kiwi Mountaineers (Hedgehog House 1997), Under a Sheltering Sky - Journeys to Mountain Heartlands (Hedgehog House 2003), New Zealand (National Geographic Books 2009), The Vanishing Wilderness of Antarctica (White Star 2009).
