Skyline : a NZ Tourism Success Story

Author(s): Jim Sullivan

NZ Non Fiction

This is the story of one of New Zealand's most successful companies - Skyline Enterprises of Queenstown. The book provides background to the company's founding by noting Queenstown's farming and goldmining days and the early tourism days of 'the cold lakes' tour. These were always destined to give way to the complete domination of Queenstown by tourism, and industry based on the lakes and mountains of the area which have always been there and which provide the backdrop to the town's iconic status as New Zealand's top tourist destination. The tourist industry grew from the determination of a handful of enthusiastic entrepreneurs who made their ideas actually work, in spite of a notable lack of government support in comparison with many other tourist centres. In the 1960s New Zealand was poised to ride the wavw of a phenomenal increase in overseas visitor numbers and Skyline's role, epitomised by the Bob's Peak road, and then the gondola to Bob's Peak, provides an outstanding pioneering story, founded on the exploits of Ian Hamilton and Skyline's first chairman, Hylton Hensman. The magic of the gondola turned Skyline into a cash-rich company and expansion followed. This book follows the fortunes of New Zealand tourism during the last 40 years through the story of this one company as venture after venture seemed to display the golden touch. Motels and lodges, the outstanding Rotorua Skyline Skyrides and the international success of the Skyline-invented luge ride, casino operations and property holdings - are all part of the Skyline story.
