Demand for Maori Eco-cultural Tourism

Landcare Research Science Series no.31. This research explores the demand for Maori cultural tourism in New Zealand. It contributes to a larger project. Te Tapoitanga Maori - Growing Regional Maori Tourism, aimed at developing sustainable growth in tourisk for Maori businesses and employment. The overall aim of that project is to develop eco-cultural tourism products with iwi. The aithors sought to understand the demand for Maori cultural tourism products from international and domestic tourists with a view to capacity building for Maori communitieis within the tourism industry. The work was carried out in two case study areas associated with the iwi involved in the project and sits alongside complementary work looking at the supply side of tourism in these two areas, one in the North Island and the other in the South Island. While both areas are remote, rural communities, they have quitedifferent characteristics in terms of history, landscape, economic development and tourism development.
