In September 1995 Ruapehu burst into life after a period of restlessness. The raw power of the ensuing eruptions captured worldwide attention as towering columns of roiling ash and steam, torrential mud-flows and incandescent lava bombs presented an ongoing spectacle. Now including coverage of the plans painstakingly put in place to avoid another Tangiwai disaster when the crater lake burst, and the sudden eruption in September 2007 which nearly killed climber William Pike. Author description

Karen Williams and partner Harry Keys have lived in the active volcanic region near Mt Ruapehu for two decades. A journalist and historian, Karen has written four books about the area including 'Volcanoes of the South Wind, a field guide to Tongariro National Park'. Harry, a scientist with the Department of Conservation, has devoted much of the past 13 years to developing an ongoing sustainable volcanic risk management system to cope with Ruapehu's cycle of eruptions and lahars.
