Correspondence from Stepehn Harvey to his family in England. "Mr Stephen Harvey of Berkley received a letter from his son David, who, with his wife and two children had an exceeding narrow escape from the terrible volcanic eruption which took place in the Hot Lake District in New Zealand in June last. Mr David Harvey when only 19 years of age emigrated to New Zealand in the year 1878, since which time he has been following his occupation as carpenter and builde at Tawiringa. A short time before the eruption he left together with his wife and family for the Hot Lake District and writing from Rotorua on July 11th." The Harvey family eventually moved to Nelson where there are still descendants living. The book also includes old photographs of the areas mentioned in the letter.
