Ross & Glendining Ltd was founded in Dunedin in 1862, during the gold rush, by Caithness-born John Ross and Robert Glendining, from Dumfries. Starting as a drapery importing business, it opened branches throughout New Zealand. This engrossing history offers not only the portrait of a firm that was at one time our largest manufacturing business, but a window on the development of the New Zealand economy and the emergence of a manufacturing sector.

Author description

S.R.H. Jones is an honorary research fellow in the Department of Economic Studies, University of Dundee. He has taught at universities in England, Australia, New Zealand and the US and began this book while working as Director of the Centre for Business History at the University of Auckland. Much of his research draws on the business archives held by the Hocken Collections at the University of Otago.
