Description

Rhododendrons are a most versatile garden plant, large and evergreen, with glorious flowers and wonderful foliage, and the big-leaf species (Falconera and Grandia) take these attributes to a whole new level. All of the big-leaf rhododendrons known to date are covered in this book, including descriptions of each, how and where they were discovered, and by whom, as well as information on the public and private gardens around the world with the best collections, and what new species are still being discovered. International expert on the genus Graham Smith and garden writer Glyn Church, both New Zealand-based, also give practical advice on growing these spectacular plants in your own garden, and how to create the best conditions in which to enjoy them. Illustrated with over 190 photographs, the majority of these from photographer Pat Greenfield.

Author description

GRAHAM SMITH is a world expert on rhododendrons and was made an Associate of Honour of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, (AHRIH) in 2007. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, combining refined botanical detail with practical down to earth information.

GLYN CHURCH has spent a lifetime studying and growing plants, gaining a masters in horticulture with the Royal Horticultural Society in the UK. After moving to New Zealand he ran a nursery specialising in rhododendrons, and more recently in hydrangeas. He has written six books, five published in the UK and US, all in collaboration with photographer Pat Greenfield.

PAT GREENFIELD developed a love for painting and writing as a child, which eventually grew into a passion for photography. She has had a long association with Pukeiti, having researched, photographed and written about the garden with Graham Smith as well as books published with Glyn Church.
