Product Information

Charles Rennie Mackintosh is one of the most iconic designers of the twentieth century and his style falls somewhere between Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts, taking the best of both and distilling them into something simple, elegant and timeless. As such, any book that looks at his flower painting is going to have a lot to teach you about bringing those qualities to a subject that positively cries out for them. Using the pre-drawn tracings that are the bedrock of this series, Fiona Peart includes five classic images ranging from single blooms and stems to varied arrangements. This isn't a book just (even?) for the beginner. If you feel anything but confident with your flower painting, give it a go. The approach is elementary, but the results are anything but that.-Artbookreview.net Ready To Paint just got even more interesting with a whole new range that gives budding artists the chance to paint like the masters. Turner, Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh - and now Glaswegian Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Famous for his unique and perennially popular way of painting flowers, flower artist Fiona Peart lifts the lid on just how to paint in this way yourself. This series begins with a brief overview of the artist's life, as well as describing what paints, papers and brushes you will need to buy to tackle the projects. I was pleased to note that no unnecessary and expensive items are listed, the author sensibly realizing that this is a beginner's series. As with all the books in this series there are six projects, five of them detailed and the sixth present just as a tracing to work on yourself, making it the perfect halfway houseA" between the staged projects and the next step of drawing it all on your own. Half of the paintings are based on Mackintosh's own works, and give the painter a chance to see how he worked. These are botanical studies in two styles, his early works and later more complex still life paintings from his later years. The other half are the author's own works, based on the Mackintosh style. As usual the projects are meticulously staged with many small captioned photographs each detailing what you add next to the growing picture. This is a great way to learn to paint, totally practical and producing an attractive result every time. I look forward to seeing what the Ready To Paint series comes up with next.-Myshelf.com I've enjoyed this series - one of the joys of painting for me is looking at how the paintings are constructed, the paints and supports used, how thick or thin and how the paints are applied, heavy or light brush strokes, whether its beautifully blended or simple mark making. For me this information is as much to enjoy (sometimes more!!) as seeing the finished artwork. This time Fiona Peart takes a look at the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. I knew his work from fabrics and furniture and Fiona shows us how the original watercolour floral studies influenced these. There a short interesting biography of his life at the beginning of the book and this helps to understand the direction his paintings followed. I'm a great fan of Fiona's watercolours and have enjoyed the way she has applied these to CRMs work. As ever there are tracings of the artworks so that the student can concentrate on the techniques used rather than worrying about getting the initial drawings right. Fiona takes two styles of CRMs works, the first is his earlier botanical works and she also uses his more complex still life studies. For both styles Fiona's instructions are very easy to follow and she explains various techniques she uses in an easily understood format with plenty of good illustrations to show exactly how its done. The distinctive style of CRMs work suits the flower studies very well and Fiona tells us a little about the original paintings she has used in the book. I've enjoyed reading this book and learned things about CRMs work and painting styles that have been fascinating to know. This book is excellent for fans of his style and for floral watercolourists in general, teaching some useful techniques and allowing us to look at botanical works in a different light.-JeannieZelos.com
