Eason Vercoe, an idealistic and impressionable 18-year-old farm boy, enrols as an undergraduate. But, shy and unworldly, he finds isolation and loneliness instead of the freedom he craves. Resolved to leave by the fourth week, he becomes excited by the words of Plato and decides to stay.
