Volcanic Kitchens - A Further Collection of Recipes, Stories and Photographs

Author(s): Henrietta Egger; Gerhard Egger

Cooking & Food

This latest publication curated by photographer Gerhard Egger and his wife Henri, celebrates a New Zealand multi-cultural community – in this instance Rotorua; the community spirit, history, Maori culture, the ethnic communities, the landscape and the environment. “We believe food plays an essential role in our community; it brings us together, shapes our memories and empowers us. Food so often creates the link which binds communities together, and sharing your meal or offering food to others is seen as a welcoming and comforting gesture.”

Volcanic Kitchens is far more than just a recipe book, you will be welcomed onto two local marae’s, Apumoana and Owhata and entranced by the love story of Hinemoa and Tutanekai as told by kaumātua Paraone Pirika a local descendent, learn of the love local Ngati Rangitihi descendent Ken Raureti has for his revered Mt Tarawera. The many family favourite recipes are all contributed by people who have had a connection with Rotorua and there is something for everyone; from recipes suitable for a student flat to more complicated recipes like Gerhard’s own Matariki slow-roast lamb. The cultural connection that food has within our community is also recognised with the contributions from Indian, Chinese and Palestinian, as well as some Maori favourites such as Brisket and puha and Fry bread.

The book is illustrated throughout with Gerhard’s images of the Rotorua area and local events.

About the Awards

The Gourmand World Cookbook Award is a prize that honors the best cookery and beverage books in the world in various categories. It was founded by Edouard Cointreau in 1995 as the “World Cookbook Awards”. In 2001 the name was changed to the current form. The aim of the award is the “good cuisine” of all nations, to promote international understanding and thus to achieve a greater awareness of good, diverse and healthy food and drink worldwide. Thousands of books from over 150 countries are submitted every year. The books are divided into the categories of awards by an international jury made up of four to five members.

Kelli Brett, Editor, Cuisine Magazine

“Connecting our community through food has never been more important and with our renewed hunger for ‘homemade’ Volcanic Kitchens arrives with recipes straight from the heart, just when we need them most. With this book, Gerhard and Henrietta Egger continue to weave the tapestry of a multi-cultural group who love to cook, and most importantly, understand the sheer joy of sharing food with those we love.”
