Cars and Kiwis : The golden age of motoring

Author(s): John McCrystal

Cars & Motorcycles

Austin Somerset, Morris Minor, Standard Vanguard, Ford Prefect, Vauxhall Wyvern, Jowett Javelin, Hillman Super Minx ...names redolent of the heyday of British car manufacturing, and for a great many of us representative of the cars we grew up with. From dated-looking Forty-niner Fords and Chevy Fleetlines, to the 'otherwordly' Forward Look Chryslers; from the chastened lines of mid-60s Ramblers, Larks and Fairlanes, to the last of the genuinely stylish American cars: Mustangs, Camaros and Firebirds - these are the cars of movies and television, of magazines and novels, of hopes and dreams. A combined and updated edition of John's previous books Yank Tanks and The Cars We Loved, this book features the British and American classics adored by all New Zealanders. It features profiles of 30 different cars on 128 pages illustrated with colour photos. First published October 2008

Product Information

John McCrystal was born in Taupo and lives in Wellington, where he works as a freelance writer. John owns a 1957 Mark II Zephyr, and if pressed, will admit that he also owns a 1976 Hillman Avenger. Despite the Avenger, however, he still regards motoring as a pleasurable occupation. Holding a doctorate in Political Studies from the University of Auckland, and despite his enforced familiarity with old cars, John is somewhat surprised at the rapid evolution he has undergone into a motoring writer. He wrote for the Automobile Association's Directions magazine, until recently he contributed a column on used cars to Wellington's Evening Post newspaper. In 2008 John won the Cathay Pacific Travel Writer of the Year Award.
