Description

Smoke & Mirrors traces a journey of closely examined nostalgia and a fascination with difficult beauty. Cutting a delicate path between the real and the imagined, interior and exterior, the light and the dark, the new and the faded, the work expresses a delicate, but potent girlishness spared from sentimentality by an ever-present grit.

Author description

Karen Inderbitzen-Waller and Delphine Avril Planqueel are well-known fashion photographers and stylists in the New Zealand and Australian community having collaborated with iconic fashion labels Kate Sylvester and NomD and artists such as Bic Runga and Brooke Fraser. 'Smoke and Mirrors' their stunning publishing debut, firmly establishes the duo as a new and important voice in New Zealand contemporary art scene. This beautiful, at times melancholic, yet darkly humorous collection of photographs traces a journey from New Zealand to Paris and back has drawn comparisons to photographer Jurgen Teller's irreverent fashion work and the poignant, uneasy compositions of Amerian William Eggleston.
