Description

At 2047 kilometres long and stretching from the southernmost tip of the South Island to Cape Reinga, State Highway 1 links this country's five main cities, and countless towns and blink-of-an-eye settlements in between. It's also the perfect route from which to explore this country's geographical diversity, traversing expansive plains and a so-called desert, meandering around rugged coastlines, crossing rivers and harbours, and skirting the country's largest lake. In View from the Road, photographer Arno Gasteiger travels from Bluff to the Far North capturing the people, places and landmarks to be discovered along New Zealand's most important highway, while Kennedy Warne reflects on the organic evolution and quirks of this often travelled, but perhaps little known, stretch of road.

Author description

Photographer Arno Gasteiger, born in Austria, moved to New Zealand in 1988 and became New Zealand Geographic magazine's primary photographer. He produced more than 80 assignments with the magazine, which took him to all parts of New Zealand and the South Pacific. With his eye for intimate and poignant human detail, Gasteiger was quickly noticed by local and international magazines and commercial companies alike. Over the last 10 years he has specialised in location photography for commercial and editorial clients. Gasteiger is the co-author of eight books, one of which, Central, won the illustrative category of New Zealand's prestigious 2004 Montana Book Awards. His work is widely exhibited, both in New Zealand and in the USA, Australia, Germany and France. Gasteiger has been a member of the Advertising & Illustrative Photographers Association (AIPA) since 1998, and now lives in Auckland. Kennedy Warne was the founding editor of New Zealand Geographic magazine, and now writes regularly for both New Zealand Geographic and National Geographic. In recent stories, he has explored issues of contested land use, place and identity, marine conservation and early New Zealand history. His books include Roads Less Travelled: Twenty Years of Exploration with New Zealand Geographic (2008), Let Them Eat Shrimp: The Tragic Disappearance of the Rainforests of the Sea (2010) and Tuhoe: Portrait of a Nation (2013).
