David Simmons MBE gathered these tales of love, war and mana from Maori sources during a lifetime of field study and research. Working from the Otago Museum and Auckland War Memorial Museum (of which he was for a time Assistant Director), he collected local traditions from throughout New Zealand, in places as widespread as the Far North, Fiordland and the Chatham Islands. Some of these tales have not previously been published; others give a local slant to more familiar traditions. Stories often recount the expansion of tribes, and their migrations within New Zealand, over several generations. The tales are highlighted with wood engravings by the late E. Mervyn Taylor , whose work frequently depicted the natural and historical heritage of New Zealand.
