The Big Book of Flight

Author(s): Rowland White

Aircraft

Everybody dreams of flying. For as long as we've been able to look up and see the birds we've wanted to join them. But our efforts to do so have not always been as elegant or accomplished. Instead, there's been danger, excitement, courage and brilliance.

The Big Book of Flight is a celebration of it all, and a lot more besides, packed with derring-do stories of aviation's pioneers as well as fascinating profiles of remarkable planes, from Spitfires to Space Shuttles (and a number of other wondrous projects that never quite got off the drawing board). Along with a unique collection of fantastic flight trivia, crucial questions are also addressed:

What's so scary about the Bermuda Triangle? Why does airline food taste so bad? And how do you make the perfect paper dart?

With stunning photographs and illustrations throughout, The Big Book of Flight promises to surprise, entertain and fire the imaginations of anyone with their head in the clouds.

Product Information

An entertaining and utterly engaging celebration of everything worth knowing about the world of flight - and more - from the bestselling author of Vulcan 607.

"A great gift for boys - and girls! - from nine to ninety. Packed full of totally vital stuff like how to build your own bottle rocket or hovercraft!" Bear Grylls "This is a fabulous book. I defy anyone with even the slightest interest in aviation not to utterly love every page. Sumptuously illustrated, this tells the story of flight with unashamed enthusiasm and erve. Read this and be swept up into the skies" James Holland, author of Dam Busters "A gorgeous fact and fun-filled tome dedicated to planes. From the perfect paper plane to how helicopters fly - with practical fun thrown in" Guardian "A fact-packed delight for aviation enthusiasts aged from nine to 90, full of derring-do ... an engaging and entertaining collection of everything worth knowing about the world of flight" RAF News "I could bang on at length about this book. It's a roll call of legends and heroes. It's the work of someone genuinely obsessed with his subject yet gifted with the ability to make his obsession inclusive rather than exclusive. From end to end it's stuffed with the kind of anecdotes that can swiftly be passed of as one's own. But I'll treasure The Big Book of Flight just because it's joyful and joyous. Read it and you'll surely detect the hand of an expert - but more than anything else it reveals the breathless excitement of a young boy. Some vitally important part of Rowland White has never grown up, never forgotten why flying machines make his heart beat faster. It's a delight to see" Neil Oliver, presenter of Coast

Rowland White was born and educated in Cambridge before studying modern history at Liverpool University. At the age of eight, Rowland wrote a primary school project he called 'JET'S'. Since then, his understanding of apostrophes and quotation marks has improved, but his enthusiasm for aviation remains undiminished. He learnt to paraglide in 1993 during a year spent teaching in Zimbabwe and has held a pilot's licence since 1998. Rowland has written three books since 2006, including the number-one bestseller Vulcan 607. All have been Sunday Times top ten bestellers. He now lives near Cambridge with his wife, Lucy, and three children. And he's hoping he might be able to find the time to start flying gliders ...
