NZ$ 34.99 each
Hardback
Author: Gordon Toi Hatfield
Published by: Hunter Media
In Stock: 15
Dedicated By Blood is the result of four years of intensive collaboration between Steur and Hatfield. Their shared passion for the Maori culture resulted in beautiful photographs that not only uncover the soul of Ta Moko, but also the pride of a clan intimately revealing the artistry and essence of Gordon’s designs. The body became the ‘wood’ for the artist and a symbol of the history of the clan and culture. This book reflects the renaissance of the Maori culture through the meaning of Ta Moko.

Paperback
Author: Paul Diamond
Published by: Random House New Zealand Ltd
In Stock: 98
This is a biography of one of New Zealand's first international media celebrities, Makereti (1873-1930). The daughter of a Maori mother and a Pakeha father, Makereti was brought up by her Maori extended family until she was sent to boarding school. She became well-known (as Guide Maggie or Maggie Papakura) throughout New Zealand and overseas as a guide at Whakarewarewa, particularly after the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. She led visits of Maori concert parties (complete with carved villages and waka) to Australia and England, but dropped out of the public view after marrying for a second time in 1912 and moving to Oxfordshire. Following her divorce in 1924, Makereti enrolled as a student at the University of Oxford and died just before her thesis about traditional Maori life was due to be examined. While her remarkable story has intrigued many people, it is not well recorded. This book - a pictorial ... more

Resistance: An Indigenous Response to Neoliberalism order quantity

Paperback
Author: Maria Bargh (ed.)
Published by: Huia Publishers
In Stock: 10
Aotearoa is one of the world leaders of neoliberalism. Successive New Zealand governments since 1984 have pursued neoliberal policies with a faith, vehemence and confidence in their success that few other governments appear to possess.

Resistance: An Indigenous Response to Neoliberalism is a collection of papers from Mâori academics, activists and leaders on the connection between global practices of neoliberalism and the diverse forms of Mâori resistance which aim to destabilise it.
At a time when ‘capital flows across borders as it has never done before, and multinational companies have bigger budgets than many states have ever had,’ this book encourages people to look more closely at Mâori views as integral and inspiring in a globalising world.

Resistance: An Indigenous Response to Neoliberalism is edited by Maria Bargh. The other contributors are Claire Charters, Moana Jackson, Bridget Robson, Cherryl Smith, ... more

Finalist in the General Non-Fiction category.

During the nineteenth century the Urewera was a remote but enticing wilderness except for the Maori who lived there, for them it was a sheltering homeland. In 1866-67 large areas were taken by confiscation or forced cession. At the end of the fighting in 1872 the Urewera became an autonomous district, governed by its own leaders. In 1921-22 the Urewera Native Reserve was abolished in law. This book provides the historical context for Tuhoe's quest for the restoration of their 'nationhood'.

Revival of an Ancient Method of Divination and Prophesy of the Polynesian Maori

Matakite-o-Maui is in fact a very ancient system of divination for prophesy used by the Maori seers and prophets. It is created around Maui-tikitiki-a-Te Ranga, otherwise known as Maui, a demi-god, a hero by his many feats, and also an ancient ancestor to Maori.

Accounts of Maui’s life are portrayed in the form of twelve myths which describe the deeds and useful devices he created to benefit mankind, and these are portrayed in the divination rite using beautifully illustrated Tarot cards.
