Dedicated By Blood is the result of four years of intensive collaboration between Steur and Hatfield. Their shared passion for the Maori culture resulted in beautiful photographs that not only uncover the soul of Ta Moko, but also the pride of a clan intimately revealing the artistry and essence of Gordon’s designs. The body became the ‘wood’ for the artist and a symbol of the history of the clan and culture. This book reflects the renaissance of the Maori culture through the meaning of Ta Moko.

This is a biography of one of New Zealand's first international media celebrities, Makereti (1873-1930). The daughter of a Maori mother and a Pakeha father, Makereti was brought up by her Maori extended family until she was sent to boarding school. She became well-known (as Guide Maggie or Maggie Papakura) throughout New Zealand and overseas as a guide at Whakarewarewa, particularly after the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. She led visits of Maori concert parties (complete with carved villages and waka) to Australia and England, but dropped out of the public view after marrying for a second time in 1912 and moving to Oxfordshire. Following her divorce in 1924, Makereti enrolled as a student at the University of Oxford and died just before her thesis about traditional Maori life was due to be examined. While her remarkable story has intrigued many people, it is not well recorded. This book - a pictorial ...

Te Papa's Maori New Year calendar, Matariki Maramataka, is full of proverbs, korero, and images that celebrate Maori principles of living - in harmony with other people, and with nature. Around New Zealand, Matariki is a time of great festivity, as well as reflection and planning for the year to come. This colourful calendar begins with the Maori New Year in June - when the star formation known as Matariki (the Pleiades) reappears in our skies - and runs through to the end of May 2011. Included are images of Maori taonga (cultural treasures), and New Zealand's changing landscape throughout the seasons.

Paki Harrison is widely regarded as New Zealand's greatest living master carver, a man with a huge reputation as a leading tohunga of the art form. He possesses immense knowledge about the traditional arts of the carver, extending way beyond the actual physical arts to include its most ancient aspects - the symbolism contained in Maori art, to its role in transmitting old tribal history. Few know more about the symbolism of the waka taua (war canoe), whare whakairo (carved meeting houses) and kowhaiwhai patterns. This major biography by Ranginui Walker, himself a well-known public figure, traces Paki Harrison's life and work, from his privileged upbringing in the Ngati Porou household of his grandmother, where he was singled out for special training. The carving and building of several big meeting houses is described in detail, from the inside.

In 1895 a meeting took place in the rugged Urewera ranges - Tuhoe country - that would have lasting effects on our views of traditional Maori society. Elsden Best, a self-taught anthropologist and quartermaster on the road past Lake Waikaremoana, was sought out by a leading Tuhoe chief, Tutakangahau of Maungapohatu. The stories he gave to Best to be recorded for future generations are with us today. Best went on to become a noted Pakeha authority on a people he would style as the last of 'the oldtime Maori'. How much did the old man tell him? Was it freely given? Can Best's writings - so pervasive today in our understanding of Maori culture - be truly relied upon? In his unique examination of this historically significant relationship, Jeffrey Paparoa Holman poses such searching questions, further informing a vital national debate on the shared identity - and destiny - of Maori and Pakeha.

A revision of the trials and tribulations of one of the most famous Maori war generals and tribal leaders, Hongi Hika, this book peels back the veneer of previous studies and dispels many misconceptions. Illustrated with plenty of maps and photographs - many in colour - this is a modern, accessible account that shows how the actions of this famous personality have been distorted by the frames of traditional historical reportage, and is an important work that updates existing scholarship on the subject.

This book is an introduction to the star group Matariki. Known in other cultures by names including the Pleiades and the Seven Sisters, Matariki featured strongly in pre-European New Zealand. It marked the beginning of the Maori calendar, and its rising before the sun in late May or early June was greeted with great festivals. It was used as a guide to planting and harvesting, and was studied by tohunga as an omen which told whether the food-gathering season would be plentiful or lean. Libby Hakaraia includes interviews with astronomers Richard Hall and Vicki Hyde, well known navigator Hekenukumai Busby, and Hapimana Rikihana, who still practises the ancient Maori art of mahi whai, or string ...
