Rauru : Tene Waitere, Maori Carving, Colonial History order quantity

NZ$ 120.00 each
Hardback
Author: Nicholas Thomas (ed) (photography Mark Adams; interviews James Schuster & Lyonel Grant)
Published by: Otago University Press

Tene Waitere of Ngati Tarawhai (1854-1931) was the most innovative Maori carver of his time; his works reached global audiences decades before the globalisation of culture became a fashionable topic.
Rauru is the highlight of a famous anthropological museum in Germany. Hinemihi, the carved house featured in one section of this book, sheltered survivors of the Tarawera eruption in 1886 before being removed to the park of an English country house. His carved Ta Moko panel is one of Te Papa the Museum of New Zealand's icons. Three out of four historic Maori meeting-houses located outside New Zealand were carved or partly carved by Waitere. The travels of his work tell us something about the interplay between empire and art, about what is made of history now. The combined perspectives of his descendants, of a leading contemporary carver, of a master photographer and a distinguished anthropologist and historian of Pacific art ... more

NZ$ 40.00 each
Paperback
Author: Ranginui Walker
Published by: Penguin Books (N.Z.) Ltd.
In Stock: 1
Paki Harrison is widely regarded as New Zealand's greatest living master carver, a man with a huge reputation as a leading tohunga of the art form. He possesses immense knowledge about the traditional arts of the carver, extending way beyond the actual physical arts to include its most ancient aspects - the symbolism contained in Maori art, to its role in transmitting old tribal history. Few know more about the symbolism of the waka taua (war canoe), whare whakairo (carved meeting houses) and kowhaiwhai patterns. This major biography by Ranginui Walker, himself a well-known public figure, traces Paki Harrison's life and work, from his privileged upbringing in the Ngati Porou household of his grandmother, where he was singled out for special training. The carving and building of several big meeting houses is described in detail, from the inside.

This is a groundbreaking book which explores the incidence and effects of catastrophic events - tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions - on Maori coastal communities in the pre- European period. It focuses in particular on a cluster of tsunamis in the late 1400s which had devastating effects from Northland to Otago on population and cultural practices. Nga Ngaru Kaiwaka is the product of meticulous and rigorous research, drawing on archaeology, geology, demography and, most importantly, oral tradition; but it will be of considerable interest to the many readers who are fascinated by New Zealand's prehistory.

Journalist and historian Dick Scott broke new ground with Ask That Mountain. The book draws on official papers, settler manuscripts and oral histories to give the first complete account of what took place at Parihaka, the small settlement at the foot of Mount Taranaki where the chiefs Te Whiti and Tohu opposed the colonial government in the latter half of the nineteenth century - making one of the world's first recorded campaigns of passive resistance.

The Beating Heart : A political and socio-economic history of Te Arawa order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 60.00 each
Hardback
Author: Vincent O'Malley & David Armstrong
Published by: Huia Publishers
In Stock: 3
The Beating Heart details the determined efforts since the 1830s of Te Arawa tribes to work with the Crown and settlers to pursue a mutually advantageous relationship under the Treaty while at the same time maintaining their autonomy, culture, and control over their land and resources. While the ultimate outcomes were often calamitous for Te Arawa, the underlying theme of this book is highly positive. The tribes never ceased to struggle for a genuinely bicultural future. The book tells the story of the survival and resurgence of a dynamic people under circumstances that were often extreme and, as such, reflects the experiences of many other iwi in New Zealand today.

One thousand years of Maori art, artifacts, and culture from an exhibit at the National Museum of New Zealand
The Te Maori exhibition of 1983-87 explored the art and artistry of Maori and offered their secrets to a then naive New Zealand. This catalogue is a superb reminder of the treasures that were shown to great acclaim both in New Zealand and overseas. Maori write about their myths, culture, and society, and about the meaning of the taonga (treasures) in the exhibition. The essays are fully illustrated. More than a hundred photographs take you back in time - photographs of carvings, exquisite tiki, and even a koauau (flute) made of human bone - and they all tell a story. If you missed the Te Maori exhibition, are interested in Maori history, or just delight in a story, this beautiful catalogue will capture all who read it. It is still one of the best primers about Maori culture available.

This is the final work in the trilogy dealing with the great Tuhoe tohunga Hohepa Kereopa. After spending more than five years working with Hohepa, Paul Moon’s extraordinary concluding volume is a powerful, moving work, evoking the majesty of the Ureweras, delving into the metaphysical realm of one of Maoridom’s most renowned tohunga, and traversing a remarkable period of New Zealand history.

Professor Moon crafts an innovative blend of personal narrative, allegory, history, and theology, built around various motifs – particularly those of truth, culture, death, and redemption. The result is a hugely engaging book that manages to penetrate a part of the nation’s culture and history that has never previously been exposed. In addition, his close observation of his surrounds, and his portrayal of the ideas that he is exposed to, enables the reader to share in these absorbing experiences.
